KIDS SPECIAL

Posted on Tue June 24, 2014.

The good news is that the Chavonnes Battery Museum has teamed up with City Sightseeing, the company that runs the iconic red double decker open-topped sightseeing buses to offer budget beating fun for the entire family this holiday with their 3 for 1 special offers.

The June July school holidays are upon us and with things remaining tough financially for many you may be facing a staycation and wondering what to do with the kids. You are not alone, more South Africans are choosing to stay at home over the holidays as tighter economic times drive people to look local. However – staycations do not mean sitting at home, and there is a growing trend towards day tripping – enjoying an affordable day out locally.

The good news is that the Chavonnes Battery Museum has teamed up with City Sightseeing, the company that runs the iconic red double decker open-topped sightseeing buses to offer budget beating fun for the entire family this holiday with their 3 for 1 special offers.

Buy one adult ticket and get two kids tickets for free
City Sightseeing have opened their 3 for 1 Kids Special where, on weekends, public and school holidays, two kids under the age of 18 can travel for free on the City Sightseeing bus or Canal Cruise boat with any full-paying adult.

Running until end October, the City Sightseeing 3 for 1 Kids Special covers special days such as the June/July school holidays, Women’s Day, Heritage Day as well as the September holidays.

The Chavonnes Battery Museum is also offering a 3 for 1 special offer and 2 kids up to the age of 18 can enter the museum free with every paying adult, on presentation of their City Sightseeing bus ticket.

Situated opposite to The Clock Tower at the V&A Waterfront, which is stop number 2 on the City Sightseeing Tour, the Chavonnes Battery Museum invites visitors to experience the birth of Cape Town.

Hop off the City Sightseeing bus at The Clock Tower and follow the signboards and cannons to find the Chavonnes Battery Museum. The Chavonnes Battery was the first of a series of defensive works which for most of the 18th Century deterred sea-borne attacks on Cape Town.  Visitors to the museum are invited to don a pirate hat (18th Century Tricorn), see how the Cape Town shoreline originally looked and admire a selection of genuine artefacts with information panel on life at the time as well as some of the original walls that have been buried for 140 years.  Kids will love seeing detailed displays about muzzle loaded cannons, how they are loaded and fired and feel the weight of a cannonball.  They can also complete the crossword puzzle and win a prize.

The Chavonnes Battery Museum is the only place where you can touch the sand of the original Cape Town shoreline - the sand that Jan Van Riebeek walked on!

A truly affordable day out
1-day tickets for the City Sightseeing bus cost R170 per adult if purchased at the Tour Office or on the bus.  However – for extra savings City Sightseeing have implemented a national price freeze on the online ticket prices for all adult Red City and Blue Mini Peninsula bus tours.  The 1-Day ticket price is only R130 per adult when bought online at www.citysightseeing.co.za.

The City Sightseeing Red City Tour takes you to many great stops around the City – including the Two Oceans Aquarium, the Clock Tower, Table Mountain and The Castle of Good Hope (to name but a few).  The scenic Blue Mini Peninsula Tour takes you to 14 stops around the Peninsula, including Kirstenbosch, Mariner’s Wharf and World of Birds.  It also includes a free Wine Tour Bus extension which takes you to three beautiful wine farms in the historical Constantia Valley – Beau Constantia, Groot Constantia and Eagles’ Nest.

Adult tickets for the Chavonnes Battery cost R35 and if you present your City Sightseeing bus ticket upon arrival then two kids can enter for free on this adult ticket.  (For those without a City Sightseeing bus ticket: kids cost R10 each and are free if they are under 5 years of age, whilst seniors are R25 each.) Museum is open 7 days a week 9am to 4pm.
